Landing incident |
Cyprus Airways |
The Aircraft was damaged beyond repair after an emergency landing at Akrotiri AFB, Cyprus. |
The plane was on approach to Da Nang in bad weather and
was very low on fuel. The weather was bad, heavy rain, low visibility and the crew was
trying a radar assisted approach at night. A deviation was not possible because of the
fuel status. A few miles short of the runway the plane touched the treetops and went down
cutting a 300 yard swath through 66 thatched roof huts in Binh Tahi. Killing the four crew
and 107 civilians on the ground.
It has been speculated that the real cause of the accident was a wind-shear.
Rumors have also been around that the plane was shot down by enemy fire. This has proven
wrong. |
